About Collage

Collage is a kind of artwork that is made by assembling different pieces to create a new, finished work of art. Collages can be made from a variety of different materials, including fabric and paper. There are tons of different styles of collage. Some collagists create abstract artwork whilst others make artwork that tells a story with people in different settings. There are also many different collage techniques. A technique is the way an artist puts together a work of art.

This involves the materials used, the way they were attached together and the way the pieces were cut. A common way to create collages is cutting out different objects from magazines and photographs to glue them together to make a finished scene. You can also create collages by tearing and cutting paper. Some artists also make collages using a number of different materials. Collages can be created with paint, string, paper and objects from nature such as leaves, to name a few. Some artists search for materials that were thrown away such as newspapers and cardboard.

A Brief History of Collage

Collage started in the Far East in the 12th century, before the age of manufacturing, when paper was precious, and was regarded as a sacred ceremonial material. The first known collages came from Japan where calligraphers copied poems onto collaged papers. From the 19th century, collage followed the trade routes and paper moved West, and the history of collage followed the manufacturing of paper. Picasso and Braque are credited with the invention of modern college around 1912 to 1914 and the English word collage is derived from the French words ‘papiers colle’ which means glued paper. The term was coined by the Cubists, however, broadly, collage is much bigger than Cubism and also includes photocollage, montage and assemblage (3D collage).
