Facts about the Isle of Wight

·         The Pepperpot, a peculiar hexagonal tower, otherwise known as St Catherine’s Oratory is the remains of England’s only surviving medieval lighthouse – dating back to 1314.

·         According to legend, St Catherine once competed with the Devil to see who should be in charge of the Isle of Wight. The Longstone at Mottistone is said to be a sandstone pillar, which St Catherine threw down in the contest. It’s four metres tall and two metres wide, suggesting Catherine was not only a saint but had some serious upper body strength, too. The stone is, in truth, an ancient burial mound.

·         The Isle of Wight is known as one of the most haunted places on earth. Despite its small size the Isle of Wight has had more sightings and hauntings than anywhere else on the planet, from all walks of history too, Roman soldiers marching, monks and grey ladies just to name a few.

·         Ryde pier is the oldest pier in the UK, it was built during Victorian times and is the oldest pier still in use in the UK.

·         The Isle of Wight is the sunniest place in the UK. The Isle of Wight receives, on average, 1,800-2,000 hours of sunshine each year – more than some parts of Spain.
