What Does a Fire Warden Do?

A fire warden’s job is to ensure that fire safety plans are properly in place and that everyone is quickly and safely evacuated from the premises in the event of a fire.

Some of the duties of a fire warden are:

• Developing a fire evacuation and emergency plan, as well as keeping it up to date.
• Ensuring the proper installation of fire-fighting and safety equipment.
• Ensuring that fire-fighting equipment is always readily available and in good working order.
• Carrying out fire risk assessments.
• Carrying out fire drills and assessing results.
• Taking quick, appropriate action in the event of a fire, i.e. evacuation and fighting fires.
• Monitoring fire safety at all times.
• Actively adopting good fire safety practices.
• Checking all fire doors.

Most of this simply involves a periodic analysis and evaluation of current safety policies and procedures in the workplace. It includes being aware of any major developments that could compromise fire safety and taking steps to introduce new measures to avoid the outbreak of fires.

The most critical part of your role as fire warden is to be prepared for an actual fire. And often, despite how carefully we plan and prepare, things sometimes go horribly wrong. If they do, you need to be ready to jump into action.
