Music Tuition Courses: Learn to Become a Music Tutor

Considering a Music Tuition Course?

If you are interested in teaching and helping people to excel at music, a music tuition course may be ideal for you. The course will teach you all there is to know about teaching music and could be your first steps to a career as a music tutor. Working as a music tutor can be an incredibly rewarding role as you get to help people become confident in their musical ability. Music is an excellent hobby to have and has many benefits for physical and mental health and wellbeing. The good news is there are tons of music tuition courses currently available.

Who is the Course For?

This course is suitable for those who dream of becoming an instrument and music tutor or a vocal coach. Additionally, the course is also suitable for those already working in the field who want to improve and hone in on their teaching craft.

Working as a Music Tutor

A music tutor is someone who gives people singing and voice lessons or teaches people how to play an instrument (for example, guitar, violin or the piano). Some music tutors work in schools and teach many students. These tutors are responsible for directing the school choirs, orchestras and bands. They may also teach theory, appreciation or composition classes to more advanced students. Other music tutors provide lessons on an individual basis, and may work out of a music store or their homes as a private music tutor. A music tutor is responsible for instructing students with the skills they require to become successful musicians in their own right.

This involves the basics of teaching how to play an instrument, in addition to fundamental concepts such as pitch, rhythm and tempo. A voice teacher instructs students in proper vocal technique. They help students to learn to remain on pitch while singing and provide tips on finding the best songs to fit a student’s voice. A private voice teacher will only work with one student at a time, whereas a voice teacher in a school is responsible for directing an entire choir. An instrumental teacher in a school setting, such as an orchestra director or a band, may be responsible for instructing students in more than one instrument, even if they are not entirely familiar with how to play every instrument in the band. What Will I Learn?

You will assess your current teaching and evaluate and explore the various teaching and learning principles. Students will learn to identify core musical skills and evaluate their own technique. The course will educate you to develop a range of strategies for teaching techniques and encourage you to explore the links between progression and motivation. Learners will increase their awareness of professional practice and values and learn to design a curriculum and devise lesson plans. Finally, you will learn to produce a personal development plan.

What Will You Achieve?

By the end of the course, you will be able to evaluate and reflect on your journey to teaching and develop an understanding of a range of learning and teaching principles. The course will enable you to compare learning and teaching principles and develop your own teaching philosophy and identify the core musical skills which need to be taught, considering how they inter-relate. You will be able to evaluate your own instrumental technique and assess exactly how you approach teaching technique to your students and explore the basis for motivation and how it is linked to progression. Students will be able to assess their own teaching practice in the context of professional practice and values, design a broad, individual lesson plan for students with reference to short-term goals and engage with various other teachers and contribute to discussion about professional development.

Career Opportunities

After completing your music tuition course, you can work as a music tutor in colleges, schools and music shops. Alternatively, you can work as a music tutor in your own home, working with one individual at a time.
