About Painting

A Brief History of Painting 

Painting is one of the oldest art forms. When societies began to craft tools and make fire, they were also learning to represent the world in pictures. These pictures were recorded in cave paintings that still exist today. Some of the oldest paintings known to exist can be discovered in the Chauvet Cave in France. The art of painting has evolved over time, through the hieroglyphics of ancient civilisations to the classical and Renaissance paintings that hand in the Louvre today. The art of painting has taken some radical turns, with modern kinds of painting including colour field and action painting. 

What Will I Learn? 

Students of painting courses will explore the learning and professional practice of painting, design and fine art and be given an introduction to key concepts in art and design. You will also learn conceptual and technical aspects of your work as it gradually becomes more self-directed. The course will teach you about painting, colour mixing, composition and brushwork. You will explore how other forms of paints work such as watercolour, oil and acrylic and how to use these kinds of paints effectively.

After completing your painting course, you can work as a painter or an artist. You could also work in an art gallery or museum as a consultant.
